Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Kigali/Bwindi Impenetrable NP

Depart Kigali after a brief welcome meeting and drive through magnificent countryside to the border of Uganda. Once across the border, it is a short drive to Bwindi Impenetrable NP, where you can relax for the remainder of the afternoon, and prepare for tomorrow's Gorilla Trek. The tour begins at 8am in the morning of Day 1 at your Kigali hotel (not included). Please be on time to meet your driver/guide at the front entrance of the hotel. A brief departure meeting will be held in the hotel reception area about general and specific aspects of the trip before setting off to Bwindi.

We strongly recommend arriving the day before as this trip does not include a night in Kigali.

  • Day 2

    Gorilla Trek

Follow experienced guides trekking deep into the forest on the slopes of the volcanoes in search of a family of mountain gorillas for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi's Impenetrable Forest is a true African jungle. About half of the world's mountain gorillas live here.

Ugandan authorities are fiercely protective of this natural treasure and permit only a maximum of 8 passengers per day (currently) to visit the gorillas.

Start with a short drive to the park headquarters and meet with your excellent local guides. The guides will provide a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. The trekking group will then head into the forest where the gorillas were the night before and track from that point. If desired, porters can be hired and will carry your personal items and assist you during the trek.

  • Day 3

    Bwindi Impenetrable NP/Kigali

Cross the border into Rwanda, then head to Kigali. Visit the genocide museum to learn more about the dark history of this fascinating country. Tour ends on arrival at hotel.

  • Fabulous experience. Because my experience was so great

    Tara Sep, 2024 Verified
  • The gorilla trek was a magical experience which I am so grateful to have participated in. It was a dream come true! The gorilla trekking was an amazing experience however there are some concerns. 1. We paid for airport transfer both arrival and departure. We provided accurate flight information yet G travels sent the wrong flight time to the pick up company. They tried to pick us up when we arrived in Zimbabwe. Thankfully they returned for the real arrival time in Rwanda. We however were approached to pay a third transfer cost because of this error which was not ours. Asking for more money for the transfer was not acceptable. 2. There suggested pick up time to take us back to the airport was late which I suspect was made to accommodate a third person. They told us our flight was later than it was and we had to change this time otherwise we would arrive late at the airport. 3. The accommodation not setting was disappointing in Uganda particularly the bathroom. We were also told there may not be enough hot water or electricity and no internet in the rooms. I am a camper so I can live without amenities but this was not disclosed at the time of booking. 4. Language barrier with the driver. He did not understand us and we did not understand some of what he said or offered. Particularly concerning was the lack of follow through for some requests.

The local currency is the Rwanda Franc in Rwanda and the Ugandan Shilling in Uganda. USD is the most widely accepted currency. It's recommended to bring enough USD cash for additional drinks, snacks, and souvenir shopping. Please note that USD notes older than 2006 are not accepted. Visa/Plus system cards are the most widely accepted debit cards, though Mastercard/Cirrus cards are harder to use. Credit cards are accepted in major cities only, usually with a 5-10% fee. Be aware of potential power outages and ATMs running out of cash, so a combination of foreign currency and cards is best.
  • What are the guidelines for tipping on this tour?

Tipping is optional but expected as a way to show satisfaction. It is a significant source of income for those in the tourism industry. Recommended guidelines (per client): CEOs and drivers $5 USD per day worked, Gorilla Trekking Guides $3-5 USD per day for the trek, Restaurant/Café servers 10% of the bill, and local guides $1 USD for every couple of hours.

  • What health information should I be aware of before traveling?

We recommend you contact your family physician or local travel clinic for the most up-to-date health information at least one month before departure. Travelers should carry a basic first-aid kit and hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes. Medical facilities are basic in these countries. Please ensure you have all the inoculations recommended by your doctor. A yellow fever certificate will be required upon entering Uganda.
  • How does the tour operator contribute to local communities?

The tour operator supports the Planeterra International Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to turning travel into impact by helping local communities earn income from tourism. Planeterra develops and supports community-owned businesses that empower Indigenous people, women, and youth, and protect the environment. The tour operator is Planeterra’s largest corporate donor, covering all operating costs, so 100% of your donation will bring opportunity to people in need.
  • What should I know about safety and security during the trip?

We recommend checking your government's travel advice for the latest safety information before departure. It is strongly advised to use a neck wallet or money belt for valuables and to leave valuable jewelry at home. Many hotels offer safety deposit boxes. A lock is recommended for securing your luggage. When you have free time, use good judgment when choosing activities. While cities are generally safe during the day, it's recommended to stay in small groups and use taxis for night-time excursions. Avoid protests or demonstrations, as they can turn violent without warning.
  • What is included in the tour price?

The tour price includes the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park guided mountain gorilla trek, all national park fees and trekking permits, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Museum, and all transport between destinations and to/from included activities.
